Plan Your Time
In your present state of deadline-driven anxiety, you’re going to have the vicious urge to dive straight into writing. Don’t do it. Resist. Abort. Pace yourself.
First choose a decent amount of time when you can write a paper. If you are slow, hesitant writer, an hour per page is maximum i would advise. In all circumstances, you can probably write a decent amount of 10 to 12 pages in five to six hours.
Set a quick schedule for yourself and then work carefully but briskly. For example lets say you have allotted two hours to write a 6 to 8 page essay. it’s a crunch but you can manage it. Spend half an hour conducting research on your topic, then put a solid hour explaining what you have learned in paper format, and finally use the last hour to edit and compile and bibliography.
Write Your Thesis and Introductory Paragraph
Your thesis is the base of your entire research paper, and good thesis automatically lends a more professional and academic outlook to the rest of your essay. Your thesis should make a claim and very briefly outline the points you will make in the paper to support that claim. Let’s say you were given the following prompt: Analyze a movie and then compare it to the decade it was produced in.
First, decide what you want to achieve in your paper. You need to explain how to movie you choose represents the decade it was produced in. You need to convince your reader that a movie can be an accurate portrayal of its decade, even if the setting was in a different time period. Place your thesis at the end of your introductory paragraph after four or five sentences that outline basic ideas and facts about your topic to give it context.
Conduct Your Research
Here is where your essay will live or die. The more research you can provide without drowning your professor or Instructure into useless facts, the better. You have to prove that you know deeply about your topic and sifted through various resources over the period of several weeks even though you haven’t in reality.
If your paper requires sources of books, utilize the library sources. If not, you can always use Google for sources. Insert your topics, and then your subtopics with keywords. Stay on the first three pages and peruse carefully. Do not click every search result carefully look at the title and summary of search results you need solid and good sources. If you use quote or fact from the web follow it with in-text citation ( if your college prefers footnotes, use those instead ). Generally, an in-text citation includes the author’s last name followed by the relevant page number with a single space in between.
Sometimes Google does not always return the sources that are academic in nature. In this case turn to databases. I recommend you use databases more then Google searches anyway because they tend to contain more reputable material. Logon to your college library web page and search for database options. I can assure your college library will have many to choose from, and from there, you will access to many scholarly articles that you can insert into your paper.
Once you establish your thesis and introductory paragraph, move on to the body paragraphs. I have found this format to be helpful for outlining simple but quality paragraph. This basic framework for a body paragraph makes it easy to plug in sentences and get a lot of writing done quickly. You must be careful to provide plenty of your own thoughts and ideas. Remember: facts support your ideas and quotes compliment them.
Create A Conclusion
The conclusion of your paper includes all your previous points surrounding them without repeating each of the previous points. Summarize the basic points of your thesis without restating facts or ideas. Mention your subtopics again and explain how they support your claim. Finally leave your reader with the sentence that makes them think about the whole paper before they have finished reading the paper. This can be a question or a thought provoking sentence.
Take A Trouble Shoot Break
If you are having problem with your paper or if you are stuck in the paper, go for a five-minute break. Run and breath deeply. Once you return from break. drink water and eat a snack. Get back to your writing work again, you can write the paper, and you will.
Once you have written man words and pages. You are done with the writing of your paper. It is time to edit and revise your paper.
Read your paper silently and quickly. and fix any of the mistakes you notice during the reading phase. Next, compile your bibliography. Collect all of your sources, format them properly and quickly then get a quick drink.
Come back with your paper again and read it as loudly as you are presenting a presentation to your audience. This will help you catch any mistakes you missed during the silent reading process. Cut of any weak arguments with a quick sentence containing the source or with more analysis and argument.
Add a title if necessary. If you don’t have time to come up with a creative title, be boring, but be true. For example: “How to Marry a Millionaire: Cultural Connections in the Nineteen Fifties.”
